Fairyland

This term is often used to describe the Czech Republic. The Czech Republic fascinates everyone who has ever visited this magnificent country. Here you will be enchanted by the atmosphere of quiet paved streets, tiled roofs, castles and small lakes. In this country, you will feel as though fairy tales from your childhood have come to life. There are about 2000 castles and fortresses, 1351 nature reserves and 3 national parks. Sightseeing attractions are very diverse. No wonder the Czech Republic is listed among the 10 most visited countries in the world.

Mineral water and springs

In the subsurface of the country there is a vast supply of medicinal mineral water. Resorts were constructed around mineral and thermal springs, medicinal mud lakes and baths. These resorts specialize in the rehabilitation and recovery of people who suffer from musculo-skeletal and nervous system impairments.

 

 

 

 

Sightseeing

The most famous sightseeing attractions include the historic Prague centre, Kutne Mountain, Cesky Krumlov, Telc, the church of Saint Jan Nepomucky on the Green Mountains (which is situated near Zdar-nad- Sazavou), the Lednicko-Valticky area, Kromeriz, and Holasovice in Southern Czech, all of which are fittingly included in the list of cultural heritage sites protected by UNESCO.

 

 

 

Magnificent nature

The diversity of the Czech natural landscape which includes mountains, hills and valleys makes this country very attractive for tourists. The mountainous regions of Bohemia, the ponds in the Trebon region, the rocky towns, national parks, and nature reserves mould the unique image of the country. The places which have the highest value are included in the list of national heritage sites protected by the government. Also, it is worth noting that some regions of the country are included in the list of UNESCO biospheric reserves – Krkonose, White Carpathians, Sumava, Trebonsko, Palava, and Krivoklatsko.

 

Food and drinks

Czech Republic is a paradise for lovers of beer, of which there is an abundance of varieties. Czech beer is popular among beer lovers all over the world. The first mention of beer dates back to 993 AD and is associated with Bishop Vojtech’s name. Nowadays the most famous breweries include Plzensky prazdroj, Budejovicky budvar, Zamecky pivovar, Krusovice etc. – there about 60 breweries altogether. In the country, several hundred kinds of beer are produced. Among them, the most popular are Pilsner Urqvel, Plzensky Prazdroj, Budvar, Gabrinus, Staropramen and the strong beer Velkopopovicky Kozel. And of course, special attention should be paid to beer produced in small local breweries which can only be tried there, since these sorts of beer have a unique and special taste.

In central Moravia, gorgeous wine is made which occupies its niche among the best European wines. The famous Czech liqueur Becherovka made in Karlovy Vary – infused with 42 herbs – acquired world fame a long tome ago. The most famous strong drinks are Slivovice (plum vodka) and “absent” – a 72 percent alcohol wormwood beverage of blue green colour banned in other countries.

The national Czech cuisine is distinguished by hearty dishes and sweet desserts. Some traditional dishes can only be tried in the Czech Republic.  A Czech trademark is Veprove Koleno (roasted pig leg) and Vepro Knedlo Zelo – stewed pork served with hot sour cabbage and dumplings. Among other dishes are Svickova (beef in sour cream sauce),  roast duck, sweet dumplings with jam, and other dishes. For vegetarians, Czech cuisine includes roast cheese in breadcrumbs. Bramborak is a fried pancake made of potatoes. Dishes made of carp and trout are very popular too. For sides, you can choose potatoes, stewed cabbage and famous dumplings – potato or wheat with lard and other fillings. The most popular kinds of appetizers are “klobasy” and  “parky”(sausages). They are seasoned with mustard or ketchup and are served everywhere. The most popular soups include garlic soup and tomato soup.

For Christmas, Czech people usually cook lentil soup, potato salad, and chicken or pork schnitzel. And of course Czech people can’t do without the traditional Christmas cookies “Cukrovi”. There are numerous kinds of these cookies and every woman has her own unique recipes, often handed down from generation to generation and kept in secrecy.

 

 

Sports

The Czech Republic is very good at decathlon. But not only all-round events are developed in the Czech Republic. Water sports are considered to be traditional in the country. Czech sportsmen have had a lot of achievements and medals in rowing. One of the most famous and popular sports is double canoe rowing. Lately, Czech sportsmen have made great strides in figure skating.

And of course, football and hockey are very popular in the Czech Republic. There are numerous organisations which support and promote these kinds of sports. Some Czech hockey players are world-famous.
