Podebrady

The main architectural building of the resort town of Podebrady is a castle on the right coast of the Labe. Originally it was a fortress in early Gothic style and belonged to Premysl II Otakar.  The most famous member of noble family which owned medieval Podebrady was Jiri from Podebrad, who was elected Czech king in 1458.

The “Hussite king” proposed to the European rulers a project of a common peacemaking organisation with a permanent assembly, an  international court and a financial department. From a modern vantage point  this project  seems to be pioneering but at that time it was doomed to fail. Apart from its resorts Podebrady is also famous for its glasswork “Bohemy”. For those who like sports, there are golf courses and a wide range of sports facilities.
